Scleral Lenses

Large-diameter specialty lenses that vault over the cornea, for eyes that are hard to fit with regular contacts.

Scleral lenses are large rigid contact lenses that rest on the white of the eye and vault over the cornea. They can help people whose corneas are irregular, or whose eyes are hard to fit with standard contact lenses.

Key benefits

  • Vaulted design: large-diameter gas-permeable lenses rest on the white of the eye (the sclera) without touching the sensitive cornea.
  • Continuous hydration: a layer of fluid stays between the lens and the cornea, giving lasting relief for dry eyes and corneal irregularities.

Who they may help

People with keratoconus, high astigmatism, irregular corneas after refractive surgery, or severe dry eye.

What the fitting involves

We take detailed measurements of the front of your eye, try a lens on, and check how it sits and how you see. Scleral lenses are custom made, so fitting usually takes more than one visit.

Living with scleral lenses

We teach you how to put the lenses in, take them out and keep them clean. Follow-up visits make sure the lenses stay comfortable and healthy for your eyes.

Questions

Are scleral lenses comfortable?

Many people find them more comfortable than smaller rigid lenses because they rest on the less sensitive white of the eye. It usually takes a short adjustment period.

General information, not a diagnosis. Your doctor will advise you at your visit.
