Myopia Management

Nearsightedness often gets worse through the school years. We measure it, track it at every visit, and talk you through options for slowing it down, including Ortho-K.

Myopia management is care that aims to slow how quickly a child’s nearsightedness gets worse. It is for children and teens whose prescription keeps changing, especially if a parent is also nearsighted.

Why it matters

Nearsightedness usually starts in childhood and tends to progress through the school years. Slowing that progression can mean a lower prescription in adulthood. Results vary from child to child, and no option stops myopia completely.

Options we may discuss

Depending on your child’s age, eyes and routine, options can include specially designed glasses, daytime contact lenses, eye drops, and orthokeratology (Ortho-K).

TO CONFIRM: which of these options the practice currently offers.

MoonLens (Ortho-K)

MoonLens is an orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lens worn overnight. While you sleep, it gently and temporarily reshapes the cornea so that light focuses on the retina instead of in front of it. Most patients see clearly all day without glasses or daytime contact lenses.

  • For myopia management and slowing nearsightedness in children and adults.
  • Corrects up to -5.00D of myopia and up to 1.50D of astigmatism.
  • FDA approved for overnight orthokeratology.
  • Non-surgical and non-invasive.

Ortho-K needs careful fitting, nightly lens care and regular follow-up visits. Dr. Olteanu is a certified MoonLens orthokeratologist.

Are you or your child a candidate?

  • Is your child’s nearsightedness getting worse every year?
  • Do you play sports, swim, or prefer not to wear glasses during the day?
  • Have you been told you have irregular corneas, high astigmatism or dry eyes?

If so, book a myopia and specialty lens consultation.

What to expect

The first visit includes a full exam and measurements of your child’s eyes. We explain the options that suit your child, what each involves day to day, and the follow-up schedule. We track the prescription and measurements at every visit.

Questions

Can myopia management cure nearsightedness?

No. The goal is to slow progression. Your child will most likely still need glasses or lenses.

Is MoonLens safe for children?

Orthokeratology is FDA approved and safe when lens hygiene is followed carefully. We go through the care routine with you and your child before you decide.

Are the results permanent?

No. MoonLens is non-surgical and reversible. If you stop wearing the lenses, the cornea returns to its original shape.

General information, not a diagnosis. Your doctor will advise you at your visit.
